check the electrical connector that is under the tank. I have a '96 and the connector is yellow. Pull it out and see if there is any melting. I had changed my light bulb to a high intensity bulb and ran it on high beam all the time. I had to change the pins and move them to one of the empty slots. I've had no problems since I've kept the light on the low beam. Good luck.
